Contemporary writers who have chosen to comment on the lives of people mentioned in the Bible invariably fall into one of two groups. The first provide us with pen portraits that paint the individuals without a single failing, the second appear intent on portraying only the weaknesses of their subjects. Cyril Barber attempts to find a different path. By paying attention to the literary nuances of the original text—as well as the history, geography and social milieu of the different people—Barber describes each person and his/her work. Cyril Barber focuses his attention on the loyal friends and relentless enemies of Paul mentioned in the book of Acts. By discussing these men and women, whose contributions are often unhonored and unsung, Barber hopes to encourage a fresh study of the book of Acts.

Each year in the United States, roughly two million people die, leaving behind them many grieving hearts in need of perspective and comfort. In this pastoral and practical text, Cyril Barber addresses the pain of losing a loved one, whether a spouse, relative, or friend. He gives particular attention to the loss of a parent and its effect on children of different ages—toddlers, young children, older children, and teens. He also advises widows and widowers, those who remarry, and those who create a new family with the children of both surviving parents. For anyone who mourns the loss of a loved one, Through the Valley of Tears is a valuable source of comfort and advice.

Pastor and professor Cyril Barber shares his method of Bible study in this text by modeling how to study through an example passage—in this case, the Genesis account of Abraham and Sarah. As Warren Wiersbe writes in the foreword, “Very few [books] do what this book does: teach us how to study God’s Word by walking through a specific context and showing us how to discover its riches.” Combining a straightforward, accessible voice with practical focus, Barber equips readers of all backgrounds to study the Bible.
