Overview

What if you were responsible for translating God's Word into a language that never had a Bible before? Can you imagine the burden you would feel to do a good job?

God takes His Word pretty seriously, and you would certainly do everything in your power to make sure that you were not putting words into God's mouth, but that you were providing a text that clearly communicated God's Word as closely to the original as possible.

This challenge to understand the heart of the original Scriptures, in order to put the original text into a new language, was the impetus for the United Bible Societies to create handbooks for Bible translators working on this very thing. The United Bible Societies' Handbook Series is a comprehensive verse-by-verse guide to understanding exactly what is being communicated by the author in the original Scriptures.

Key Features

  • Exegetical, historical, cultural, and linguistic information on the original text
  • Verse-by-verse guides
  • An essential tool for Bible translators

Top Highlights

“Verses 1–2 form a single sentence in the Greek. Grammatically, the main verb is the verb for let us run. In addition there are three dependent clauses, the verbs of which are rendered (1) we have, literally ‘having,’ (2) rid ourselves of, literally ‘ridding ourselves of’ or ‘laying aside,’ and (3) let us keep our eyes fixed, literally ‘looking steadily at.’” (Page 287)

“If ‘pioneer’ and ‘perfecter’ are primarily expressions of time (‘beginner’ and ‘ender’), Jesus is thought of here as the supreme example of faith in God. On the other hand, ‘pioneer’ and ‘perfecter’ may refer to Jesus as the source of other people’s faith in God, and as the one who brings that faith to full maturity. ‘Our’ may be implied if Jesus is the source but not if he is the example.” (Page 290)

“It is now easier to see the meaning of verse 2b as a whole. This may be expanded as follows: ‘By God’s command and appointment, his Son is shortly to take possession of the entire universe. But in any case, the universe belongs by right to the Son, since it was through him that God made it and everything it contains.’” (Page 8)

“‘free ourselves from everything which weighs us down, especially from sin, which so easily clings to us.’” (Page 289)

“‘What God has said is, as it were, alive’ or ‘… is as though it were alive.’ The expression active may be expressed as ‘has power,’ or ‘can do things,’ or ‘accomplishes whatever it is intended to accomplish.’” (Page 84)
