Overview

2 Timothy is the last letter the apostle Paul ever wrote, and it contains his final counsel to Christian believers. From his opening words—grace, mercy and peace—to his closing blessing—grace be with you—his letter tersely counsels young Timothy what to do in the light of influences and pressures believers face as they live for God in difficult times. This easy-to-read guide to Paul's letter may be used for group or individual study.

Top Highlights

“When Paul speaks of ‘a form of godliness’, he means that it is possible to engage in the outward ritual of worship, in the hymns, the prayers and the liturgy, but know nothing of the inward power of the Holy Spirit. And without the reality of the presence and power of God, religion is an empty formality, and empty religion makes for empty souls of which we have more than enough in many churches today.” (Page 69)

“In ministry, the difference between the good and bad workman is that the former wants the approval of God upon his work, whereas the latter wants the approval of men.” (Page 57)

“The Christian cannot expect a fruitful spiritual life without perseverance and effort.” (Pages 42–43)

“Or perhaps we are ashamed of the gospel because we value too highly the opinion of others; we fear ridicule because they may consider us old-fashioned or naïve. But should that matter? Is what others think of us to be regarded as more important than what God thinks of us?” (Page 28)

“Paul is chiefly concerned to remind him that, as a pastor, the ‘deposit’ of the gospel has been entrusted to his care and that he is to preach it faithfully and ensure that it is transmitted to other faithful men who will teach it to future generations.” (Page 10)
