As Jesus’s divine nature and messiahship became contested within the early church, the apostle John sent clear and focused guidance in three short letters. He urged the believers to hold fast to Jesus’s identity as the Son of God and the long-awaited Christ, and to live in light of this truth. John wrote with warm pastoral care, praising God for his holiness and love-qualities Jesus’s followers will imitate. Authors Trent A. Rogers and Jeremy M. Kimble take up these themes and more in this pastoral, exegetical, and homiletical study. John’s letters emphasize the essential connection of sound theology and faithful practice, speaking a powerful message for today’s church.
