About Dwight Lyman Moody

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837–1899) was born in Northfield, Mass. His father died soon after, and Moody was forced to work to support the family at an early age. In 1854, Moody took a job at his uncle’s shoe store and one of the conditions upon employment was that he should regularly attend his uncle’s church. It was at this church where his conversion took place. He moved to Chicago in 1856, and after working as a successful Sunday-school teacher and building a membership of 1,500 pupils, the Illinois Street Church was formed. He then began his revival work, which would become his life-long endeavor.

Beginning in 1872, Moody would travel and preach in Great Britain, winning the esteem of many prominent evangelicals. When he returned to America, he had invitations all over the country for speaking engagements. For the next 20 years, Moody would travel the globe, packing churches and revival halls with those wanting to hear him preach. He was honest, preached a Calvinistic creed which he accepted with all his heart, and was a master of an effective style. During all of his travels, he found time to write and publish numerous works.

Moody was also known for the educational institutions he started. The Illinois Street Church he started was later renamed in his honor to Moody Church. In 1886, Moody established the Chicago Evangelization Society for the education and training of Christian workers. This institution was renamed the Moody Bible Institute in his honor after he passed away in 1899.

“But no man can be a true worker for God, and a successful winner of souls without love.” (Page 29)

“Unbelief is as much an enemy to the Christian as it is to the unconverted. It will keep back the blessing now as much as it did in the days of Christ.” (Page 41)

“When we are weak then we are strong. People often think they have not strength enough; the fact is we have too much strength. It is when we feel that we have no strength of our own, that we are willing God should use us, and work through us. If we are leaning on God’s strength, we have more than all the strength of the world.” (Page 82)

“You may go to mass meetings and discuss the question of ‘How to reach the masses,’ but when you have done with discussion you have to go back to personal effort. Every man and woman who loves the Lord Jesus Christ must wake up to the fact that he or she has a mission in the world, in this work of reaching the lost.” (Page 67)

“It is not always more work that we want so much as a better motive. Many of us do a good deal of work, but we must remember that God looks at the motive. The only tree on this earth that can produce fruit which is pleasing to God is the tree of love.” (Page 28)

Dwight L. Moody

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837–1899) is considered one of the nineteenth century’s greatest evangelists. After moving to Chicago in 1856, Moody began a Sunday School class, the attendance of which quickly grew to over 1,500. This growth allowed Moody to form the Illinois Street Church.

As Moody traveled to preach in Great Britain, he began winning the esteem of many prominent evangelicals. For the next 20 years, Moody traveled the world, speaking, preaching, and finding time to write as well. In 1886, Moody established the Chicago Evangelization Society (later renamed the Moody Bible Institute) to educate and train Christian workers.

The Works of Dwight L. Moody (26 vols.) contains hundreds of his sermons and addresses, plus his works on heaven, grace, prayer, the 10 Commandments, Christian living, and biblical characters. He is also the author of Arrows and Anecdotes, included in Goodly Heritage Library: Shelf Two.
