Overview

This volume completes the series of three that are devoted to St. Augustine’s works on the New Testament. The writings on the Epistles to the Romans and Galatians are among his earliest. On the other hand, The Mirror is very late. It is unique among Augustine’s writings in focusing on passages with a moral thrust from both the Old and the New Testaments, with brief introductions by Augustine himself, which were intended to serve as a kind of mirror to the reader: Would readers, in other words, be able to see themselves in these passages and measure themselves against them? All four works, especially The Mirror, offer valuable and sometimes new insights into Augustine’s way of thinking.

Aurelius Augustinus (354–430) is often simply referred to as St. Augustine or Augustine Bishop of Hippo (the ancient name of the modern city of Annaba in Algeria). He is the preeminent Doctor of the Church according to Roman Catholicism, and is considered by Evangelical Protestants to be in the tradition of the Apostle Paul as the theological fountainhead of the Reformation teaching on salvation and grace.
