This library of issues from Liberty presents Seventh-day Adventist perspectives on church-state struggles during World War I, the infamous Scopes Trial, prohibition, and the other significant issues and events from 1906 to 1936. Liberty is a periodical published by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, advocating separation of church and state and addressing current faith-related events in politics. This publication is widely read, with a present circulation of nearly 200,000. Liberty was first called American Sentinel (1886) and then Sentinel of Liberty (1900). According to its first issue, this publication is devoted to “The defense of American institutions, the preservation of the United States Constitution as it is, so far as regards religion or religious tests, and the maintenance of human rights, both civil and religious. It will ever be uncompromisingly opposed to anything tending toward a union of church and state, either in name or in fact.” These are the earliest issues of Liberty under its current name. Study the relationship between Christianity and culture in the early twentieth century with this historical SDA magazine.
