S. Edalji (1841–1918) was born in Bombay, India, and he converted to Christianity in his teenage years. Educated at the Free Church of Scotland College, he then trained as an Anglican missionary at St. Augustine’s College in Canterbury. In 1876, he became Vicar of Great Wyrley in Staffordshire.
