In his review of the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary Print Edition, Gene M. Tucker, of the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, describes the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary as “a monumental work.” He calls it “a gold mine of information on and interpretation of an extremely wide range of topics concerning the Bible and its environment, from AARON to ZUZIM.” This full review is featured in the Critical Review of Books in Religion set.

The Anchor Yale Bible Series, previously the Anchor Bible Series, is a renowned publishing program that for more than 50 years has produced books devoted to the latest scholarship on the Bible and biblical topics. Yale University Press, having acquired this prestigious series in 2007, is now proud to offer all previously published Anchor Bible titles as well as new books—more than 115 titles in all. Many more volumes are in progress as the AYB Editorial Board, under the direction of General Editor John J. Collins, vigorously pursues the goal of bringing to a wide audience the most important new ideas, the latest research findings, and the clearest possible analysis of the Bible. Widely recognized as the flagship of American biblical scholarship, the Anchor Yale Bible Series is comprised of:

...Because of the numerous developments in biblical scholarship during the past three decades, the editor felt (rightly) that it was time for a Bible dictionary that would represent the current state of the discipline.
The Anchor Bible Dictionary (ABD) is the result of his vision. The ABD is both international and interconfessional, with nearly 1,000 contributors from around the world representing Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, and Muslim traditions (and also those of no religious tradition). The list of contributing scholars includes names long associated with biblical and theological studies. The currency of the dictionary as a whole is reflected especially in the inclusion of such subjects as the Dead Sea Scrolls, early Jewish-Christian relations, the historical Jesus, and sociological and literary methods of biblical criticism (including feminist hermeneutics), and in numerous entries on archaeological sites.
In addition, the bibliographies are usually up to date and often extensive. Unlike previous Bible dictionaries, the bibliographic entries in the ABD are complete citations, listed individually rather than in a run-on fashion, and hence easier to use.
...The ABD deserves a place on the shelves beside the standard Bible dictionaries of previous generations and is recommended for public, academic, and seminary libraries.

—Craig W. Beard, University of Alabama at Birmingham Library

It's the academic standard for a general Bible dictionary. Evangelicals will occasionally want to look elsewhere to get a clearer Evangelical stance on issues where that matters. For that, I generally go to ISBE.

While extensive and thoroughly researched, I found the tone 'snarky' at times. After speaking with great customer service rep, Ben, I found out that the contributors come from all areas: secular, Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, etc. When he said that it made sense that the article on Ezra included scholarship that supported that no real Ezra ever existed-- without that seeming like it was a big deal. Now that I know that, when I read the "Praise for the Print Edition" above now, I see I could have found this out prior to purchasing. The quote above even mentions "feminist hermeneutics." I don't know what that is, but I am more comfortable with using other resources and am grateful for Logos letting me exchange this for something else. Cynthia Thomas

The density and quality of useable information that the authors of the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary were able to put into one single reference is remarkable. I had this series recommended to me by Tommy in the Sales department. I highly recommend that anyone interested in getting the right resources for their needs, trust in Logos Sales. they're not the stereotypical used-car-like sales team. They truly care about the customers needs.Without Tommy's willingness to help, I would have likely never been introduced to Anchor Yale. Thanks Tommy!

This is a very thorough Bible dictionary with longer articles that include more academic content. I start by looking at more general audience oriented Bible dictionaries for a topic (headword), then move on to deeper, more thorough Bible dictionaries like this one to get a more nuanced and advanced treatment of a topic. Make sure to prioritize it as a resource--make it one of your top 5 Bible dictionaries.

Does it sound to anyone else like they are about to come out with a new edition of this resource? If not, then this is a good deal. If yes, then, the upgrade price may not be worth it. (I am facing this with the IVP Dictionaries, getting the updated 2nd edition of the Jesus and the Gospels volume, even though I have the first edition, would cost about $42 dollars).

A standard work for years, the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary is an indispensable resource for students and scholars. The six volumes are as comprehensive as they are in-depth. As with many other reference works, the electronic format is preferable both because of the size of the print version and the ease of searching. This is a valuable tool and I'm glad Logos continues to offer it.

Very diverse. Some have called it "liberal" but the scholarship in it is second to none. It's a must have for every serious student of the Bible. Must be used in conjunction with other top academic works like the IVP Black Dictionaries and some smaller works like Eerdman's Dictionary of the Bible for the sake of practicality. Some articles are too long to read and that's where the smaller works come in handy when you just want a synopsis of any given topic. Great resource!

I long loved the Anchor Bible Dictionary as a resource to go to when I hope to real dig into a subject. I am pleased that it has gone from a resource that is looked upon with suspicion by more conservative Christians to a resource that is widely embraced from all circles. It may be close to 20 years old but it in no way seems dated. While I have no doubts important developments have happened especially in the archeological arena, this set is a good starting import for a serious topic involving people places and even a few theological concepts. I cannot imagine not having it.

AYBD is THE scholarly Bible Dictionary. Lengthy bibliographies, detailed articles on many subjects, and an academic approach (i.e. not put out by a creedal or religiously affiliated publisher) make it an indispensable research tool. AYBD (at the time ABD) was my first purchase in Logos.

While writing my recent work on the Gospel of Mark, I more than once turned to the Anchor Bible Dictionary for facts and other insights. Unfortunately, more often than not, the six volume set resided safely at home. In the nearly 8 years since I first purchased them, I have had the pleasure of using them just a handful of times. Yet, since I received the Logos set, I’ve had it open on my ipad and/or Macbook more than I can count. The ability to carry around the library of information is going to come in handy. Okay, so you do not have the Anchor Bible Dictionary and you are not convinced you want one. So, this video and this post doesn’t mean much to you. I cannot help personal taste, I guess, but if you would listen just a bit. I have yet to find any set of dictionaries quite like the ABD. I’ve read through every article once, and many of them twice. They do not tow a particular ideological line, with scholars representing a wide variety of viewpoints you’ll never know. What I mean is this: The information contained in this set is of immense importance and should not be dismissed because it is deemed conservative or liberal. Indeed, the scholarship is sound and often takes into account various opinions that may differ from the essayist’s own. If you are a critical scholar, a concerned student, or a reader of Scripture for something other than devotional material, the ABD is where it’s at. There is no better resource, I think, when it comes to presenting what the ABD presents. So, to sum this post up. 1.) If you have the ABD in hardcopy and haven’t yet decided if you want the electronic version, trust me, you do. Go ahead and donate your hard copy to someone or a library and purchase the set from Logos. 2.) If you do not have the ABD yet, get it. You will not be disappointed. The scholarship is second to none.

I discovered AYBD for the first time in Seminary and it was one of the first titles I added to my Logos collection when I had the chance. As the description says, the print version is over 7,200 pages. The result is that words covered in AYBD usually gets more than just the quick treatment a single volume dictionary requires. I find AYBD to be approachable and helpful. Like any publication, there are contributors and point you'll have to take with a grain of salt, but in general this is a great resource and will be a great asset in your Logos library.
