“I do not for a moment deny the need to learn to hear the voice of the biblical text, and that in this learning rigorous philological and historical disciplines play an invaluable role, and that certain beliefs may need to be bracketed at certain stages of the enterprise. But the very definition of the task as ‘history’ distinct from ‘theology’ may risk putting out of reach that which drives the task in the first place, i.e. the desire to hear not merely ancient and respected religious voices, but to encounter God and to hear God’s voice in and through the medium of the biblical text.56 So I would like to conclude with one proposal about the nature and practice of biblical theology as a scholarly discipline.” (Page 201)
“Those of us who pursue biblical theology (by whatever name we call it)2 usually do so out of a conviction of the importance of the discipline for the life and health of the Christian Church. For if Scripture is not only the primary source but also the fundamental norm of Christian faith (however much we may continue to debate what these do, and do not, entail), then the ability to clarify, communicate and appropriate what Scripture says about God and humanity is an enduring need, constantly to be renewed as the broader contexts of human life and thought develop and change. Biblical theology is thus, in some form or other, the endeavour to speak and/or write truthfully about God via the interpretation of Scripture where God’s self-revelation to Israel and in Christ is to be found.” (Pages 177–178)
