Top Highlights

“The gospel lifts the believer from the negative life of avoiding wrong, to the positive life of striving for that which is right in God’s sight.” (Page 763)

“Each church is assured, ‘I know thy works,’ then praised for some virtue or blamed for some fault, or both. Smyrna and Philadelphia are praised. Laodicea is blamed. Ephesus, Pergamos, Thyatira, and Sardis are praised and blamed.” (Page 808)

“Man cannot sin against God without experiencing a profound sense of alienation and shame.” (Page 16)

“The writer is saying that not until Abraham acted upon his faith did that faith come to fruition. Until he lifted the knife over his son, his ultimate surrender to God had not occurred. Faith is not just a nice attitude toward God; it is submission to his will. To will it in the heart is not enough. The act is the ultimate test.” (Page 32)

“The better text is ‘on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased.’ The Gospel does not promise the cessation of war and strife upon the earth in this age. It does affirm that men who belong to God will experience a peace that is not dependent upon outward circumstances.” (Page 638)

As a teacher's guide, it does break down the Bible in a simple, analytical way, that derives and clearly lays out moral lessons. When you examine it more closely, such as in passages like 1 Corinthians 11, 14, and 1 Timothy 2, where specific instructions are given for the distinct role of men and women, it clearly follows the model of cultural relativism. It basically teaches that the main reason for any distinction between men and women, is because Paul was a "child of his day", and boldly asserts that his instructions "no longer apply" for us today (see comments on 1 Corinthians 11:12-16). Likewise, in 1 Timothy chapter 2, it states that Paul was instructing Timothy to "be mindful of the social realities of the time and of the circumstances of his city", which totally ignores and contradicts Paul's explanation that the reasons were because God created Adam "protos", and because of Eve's role in the fall.
