“It’s fighting, fight back. Oh, if only it didn’t exist at all! If with bad habits it has increased in strength, with good habits it will die; all you have to do is not give it satisfaction, not give in and so gorge it, but resist and so kill it. Still, as long as it’s there, it’s your enemy. If you don’t consent to it, and never get drunk, it will grow less and less every day; because it gets its strength from your submission to it. I mean, if you do give in to it, and get drunk, you are giving it strength.” (Page 42)

“And in this warfare consists the whole life of holy people. Now what am I to say about the impure, who don’t even put up a fight? They are subjugated and dragged around; no, they are not even dragged around, because they follow willingly of their own accord. This, I repeat, is the battle of the saints; and in this warfare you are always at risk, until you die. But at the end, in the triumphant celebration of that victory, what is being said? Or rather, what does the apostle say, as he already anticipates his triumph? Then will come to pass the word that is written: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, death, is your strife? Where, death, is your sting?” (Pages 44–45)

“Do not lust.9 But because that cannot be achieved here, at least let us achieve what holy scripture says yet again: Do not go after your lusts (Sir 18:30). It would be better not to have any; but because they are there, do not go after them. They aren’t keen to go after you; don’t you be keen to go after them. If they did want to go after you, they would cease to be, because they would not be rebelling against your mind.10 They are rebels, be a rebel yourself against them; they are fighting, fight them back; they are fighting to the finish, fight to the finish yourself;11 make sure of one thing alone: don’t let them win.” (Page 42)
