Overview

The New Testament depends heavily on the Old Testament. The significant metaphors, themes, and stories are used by all the writers of the New. The New Testament contains stories of prophecies and promises fulfilled in the life and work of Jesus Christ and in the work of the Early Church. Understanding the New Testament use of the Old Testament is critical for interpretation and exegesis. This resource, prepared by David A. Jones, documents all Old Testament allusions and quotations found in the New Testament.

Dr. David L. Jones joined the faculty and administration of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in May of 2003. Prior to his arrival, he was pastor of Amagansett Presbyterian Church in Amagansett, New York (Long Island). Ordained in 1982, Jones has spent over twenty-one years in pastoral ministry serving churches in Southampton, New York; Jeffersonville, New York; Roscoe, New York; Jackson, Georgia; and McDonough, Georgia. In 2000, the Greater Atlanta Presbytery named Jones "Small Church Pastor of the Year" for his work in Jackson, simultaneously granting the "Small Church of the Year" award to the congregation. This was the first time pastor and congregation received the award together. At Sullivan County Community College, Jones was valedictorian and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. He received the Outstanding Student Award, the Distinguished Graduate Award, and Highest Honors in Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counseling. He is a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, has experience as an emergency room crisis counselor, a hospital chaplain, a police chaplain, a college chaplain, and a community-based pastoral counselor. For seven years he served as executive director of the Harmony Grove Counseling Center in Lilburn, Georgia. In both Long Island and Hudson River Presbyteries Jones served on the Committee on Ministry. David's essay: "Peace is Systemic†was awarded first prize in Bethany Theological Seminary's Peace Essay Writing Contest and will be published in the summer 2008 issue of Messenger, the magazine of The Church of the Brethren. In 2008 David was elected President of The Association of Doctor of Ministry Education (ADME). David's essay entitled On Being (not becoming) a Disciple was recently published in The Living Pulpit.
