International Critical Commentaries: Old Testament

The International Critical Commentary, published by T&T Clark International, has long held a special place among works on the Bible. It brings together all the relevant aids to exegesis: linguistic and textual, archaeological, historical, literary, and theological, with a comprehensiveness and quality of scholarship unmatched by any other series. This set includes all of the International Critical Commentaries on the Old Testament.

The ICC series has also been rather difficult to purchase in its entirety, due in part to the cost of the print volumes, numerous revisions of various volumes, and the fact that most retailers do not offer the entire set as one purchase. The Logos edition contains the most recent edition of each title and provides an easy way to own every volume of this often-cited commentary set.

If you were to purchase all 23 volumes in print at suggested retail price, the cost would be over $1,200.00. The Logos edition provides a substantial discount and presents the content in a more flexible medium than print!

This series is under the editorship of Professor J. A. Emerton of Cambridge, Professor C. E. B. Cranfield of Durham and Professor G. N. Stanton of Cambridge.

More About This Series

The depth of analysis found in the International Commentary Series has yet to be surpassed in any commentary collection. One of the best features of this series is the extensive amount of background information given in each volume's introduction. For example the International Critical Commentary on Judges by George F. Moore includes several sections in the book's introduction. Topics dealt with include:

  1. Information on the title itself and the placement of Judges in the Canon
  2. The history of the Judges, 2:6 through 16:31 (with specific attention paid to character and age)
  3. The sources of Judges, 2:6 through 16:31
  4. The composition of the Book of Judges
  5. Chronology of the Book of Judges
  6. Hebrew Text and Ancient Versions
  7. Interpreters of the Book of Judges

Keep in mind, all of this analysis is provided before the actual commentary begins. Each volume packs more information into the introduction than you will often find in the body of most commentaries! Also consider that with the electronic versions of each volume, you will never need to leaf through the hundreds of pages in each volume searching for the passage you are studying.

Praise for the ICC

Job

One is at once impressed by the critical conservatism of the book. Every part of it is pervaded by it, the fine Introduction in which the chapter on "The Purpose and Method of the Writer" is especially noteworthy; the careful, clear, comprehensive summaries of the argument preceding the detailed exegesis which are the best in literature on Job as far as I know it; the exegetical notes; and the grammatical, lexical and textcritical notes. Severe critical self-restraint and extraordinary critical judgment distinguish (it).
—JSTOR Review

Hosea

This fine, learned and patient commentary will be a great resource for those who wish to engage in a detailed study of Hosea. [...] Macintosh is tireless in his attempts to elucidate Hosea's language, ranging widely over scholarship of many centuries, but always building his comments into a lucid and coherent synthesis. [...] This is a distinguished, 'advanced' commentary that blends conservatism and innovation, and a worthy addition to the ICC.
—Philip Satterthwaite, Anvil
In this commentary, the result of a fifteen year effort, Macintosh succeeds admirably in applying traditional linguistic and historical tools of exegesis.
—Gale A. Yee, University of St Thomas, St. Paul, The Catholic Biblical Quarterly
