Connections Year C, Volumes 1 & 2
Overview
Designed to empower preachers as they lead their congregations to connect their lives to Scripture, Connections features a broad set of interpretive tools that provide commentary and worship aids on the Revised Common Lectionary. For each worship day within the three-year lectionary cycle, the commentaries in Connections link the individual lection reading with Scripture as a whole as well as to the larger world. In addition, Connections places each Psalm reading in conversation with the other lections for the day to highlight the themes of the liturgical season. Finally, sidebars offer additional connections to Scripture for each Sunday or worship day.
The two volumes included in this collection, provide readings and commentary for the first two thirds of Year C in the Revised Common Lectionary Cycle, from Advent through the Day of Pentecost. The third and final volume of the series is still forthcoming.
Preachers will find in the Connections series many ideas and approaches to sustain lively and provocative preaching for years to come. But beyond the deep reservoir of preaching connections found in these pages, preachers will also find here a habit of mind, a way of thinking about biblical preaching. Being guided by the essays in Connections to see many connections between biblical texts and their various contexts, preachers will be stimulated to make other connections for themselves. Connections is an abundant collection of creative preaching ideas, and it is also a spur to continued creativity.

Thomas G. Long is the Bandy Professor of Preaching at Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
Cynthia L. Rigby is the W. C. Brown Professor of Theology at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas. Rigby is the author of more than thirty articles and book chapters. She is the coeditor (with Beverly Gaventa) of Blessed One: Protestant Perspectives on Mary and editor of Power, Powerlessness, and the Divine: New Inquiries in Bible and Theology.
Luke A. Powery is the dean of Duke University Chapel and associate professor of homiletics at Duke Divinity School. A national leader in the theological study of the art of preaching, Powery regularly delivers sermons at Duke Chapel as well as at churches throughout the U.S. and abroad.
Joel B. Green is dean of the School of Theology and Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California.

I have the paper version of Year C Vol 1, and I have found it to be refreshing and timely. This is a successor series to the quite good Feasting on the Word, also by John Knox Press, and it also is tied to the assigned readings of the Revised Common Lectionary. The format is different from FotW, as it has two essays for each of the three main readings, one covering exegesis and one covering contemporary reflection and application. There are also excerpts from various classic, medieval, and patristic Christian writers scattered throughout as well. My only quibble so far is that the essay writers clearly come from a non-liturgical-tradition background, so that some (to me as an Episcopal priest) obvious worship-related points get overlooked sometimes. But at the same time I appreciate the brevity-within-completeness. You can easily read over an entire Sunday's essays in an hour or two. Not that we ought to skimp on our study, but pastoral life does often happen. When it does, Connections is a good place to fall back to.
