Overview

Readers of the New Testament often encounter quotes or allusions to the Old Testament that may be unfamiliar or obscure. In this volume, G. K. Beale and D. A. Carson have brought together a distinguished team of scholars to isolate, catalog, and comment on both the obvious Old Testament quotations and the more subtle allusions found in the New Testament. The result is a comprehensive commentary on the Old Testament references that appear from Matthew through Revelation. It is a vital resource for the reference library of every student of the New Testament.

Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament was a Christianity Today 2008 Book Award winner.

  • Contains contributions from an impressive list of scholars
  • Complete commentary on all Old Testament references and allusions in the New Testament
  • Hyperlinked Scripture texts allow easy navigation between the Old and New Testaments as you study
  • Craig L. Blomberg (Denver Seminary) on Matthew

  • Frank S. Thielman (Beeson Divinity School) on Ephesians
  • G. K. Beale (Wheaton College Graduate School) on Colossians
  • Jeffrey A. D. Weima (Calvin Theological Seminary) on 1 and 2 Thessalonians

This really is a new sort of commentary! For the first time we are given a continuous exegetical reading of the way each New Testament book quotes, alludes to, and evokes the Old Testament Scriptures. This volume will be an immensely useful resource for all kinds of study of the New Testament.

—Richard Bauckham, professor of New Testament Studies and Bishop Wardlaw Professor, St. Mary's College, University of St. Andrews

Finally a volume that surveys the use of the Old Testament in each book of the New Testament. Written by top-tier scholars with unsurpassed expertise in New Testament exegesis, these essays model sound engagement with Scripture that quotes Scripture. This excellent collection is a must-read for all who wish to understand how the New Testament writers understood and used their Bible. This long-awaited volume deserves to become a standard text that will hopefully launch a new stage of fresh work in biblical research.

—Karen H. Jobes, Gerald F. Hawthorne Professor of New Testament Greek and Exegesis, Wheaton College

Every scholar would profit by having a copy of this thorough and judicious work on his or her desk. The authors have collected for us an immense amount of material and insight in a relatively short space, and many of us will be grateful for their efforts. This commentary is a profound witness to the unity of the Testaments in the mystery of Christ.

—Francis Martin, Cardinal Adam Maida Chair of Biblical Studies, Sacred Heart Seminary

Finally we have a work that examines the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament and covers the entirety of the New Testament in a single volume. Pastors, students, and scholars will profit from the careful attention to both the Old and New Testament contexts in which the citations occur, and they will be enriched by the theological depth represented in this important book.

—Thomas R. Schreiner, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

More than a generation ago, C. H. Dodd and a few other scholars began sowing the seeds of a new and fruitful approach to reading Scripture, by studying the New Testament writers' use of Old Testament texts. The present commentary thus represents the harvest of decades of research into the relationship between the Old and New Testaments. By carefully observing various factors, ranging from the textual to the theological, each contributor shows how the New Testament writers were not only careful readers of the Old Testament but also profound theologians themselves. The scholars on this superb team assembled by Beale and Carson distill many new and remarkable insights for exegesis and theology, all of which serve to demonstrate the explanatory power of this approach for the present and the future. This landmark volume should prove to be an invaluable resource for both the church and the academy—for pastors, teachers, and students alike, whether Protestant or Catholic—and for anyone wanting to go deeper into the heart of sacred Scripture. Indeed, Beale and Carson are to be thanked and congratulated for a momentous accomplishment.

—Scott Hahn, Pope Benedict XVI Chair of Biblical Theology and Liturgical Proclamation, St. Vincent Seminary; professor of scripture and theology, Franciscan University of Steubenville

This book is will be an integrated part of my preperation for contextual study from now on. The insight and biblical descriptions are well thought out and give the reader a broader knowledge, as well as passage specific. Logos always hits a home run when they put these books out. We are all better for it, as pastors, lay leaders, professors, seminary students and followers of Christ just wanting to dig deeper into the Word. This book assist with that process.

I have a hard copy of this volume at the desk where I prepare my homilies. It has proven to be a valuable reference. In my Protestant days, I had the privilege of knowing a number of the contributors to this volume, and I can speak for the quality of their work. I have found this has enhanced my homiletic preparation and inspiration in quite wonderful and interesting ways. - Deacon Chuck Hall

Very helpful. It goes deeper than merely a cross reference. It covers where the passage does not directly quote the OT, but merely alludes to it. Very helpful to gain a full Biblical understanding of a NT passage.

I read the first paragraphs of this book, on the so called ‘genealogy’ of Jesus, and was rather disappointed. The list of biblical names (1:2-17) is typical for the way Matthew uses the text of the Old Testament. In order to make his (theological) point he deliberately leaves out three names, slightly changes the names of two others and includes four rather disreputable women as forbears. For the authour(s) It would have been an excellent opportunity to explain Matthew’s hermeneutics regarding the text of the Old Testament.

What a team: Carson & Beale. With the detail needed for Revelation, this volume pays for itself just with this study.

Wonderful, very helpful to link OT and NT. I love the way it let me see the continuity of the bible story through genesis to revelation. Well written, and full of reference with expositional comments. LOVE IT

Speculation abounds through academia, and church concerning how and why the NT authors use the OT texts the way they do. I found this text immensely helpful in approaching this question. If you purchase this resource, and read through it, or even use it as a great Scripture reference tool, you will find its insights will deepen your understanding of not only the NT message, but also how that message is embedded within the greater narrative of God's plan.

Outstanding, high quality commentary. Succinct and to-the-point, covering the major thematic threads of the relevant passage, but without getting too bogged down in tremendous detail and a mass of opinions about the passage. The links to the Old Testament are well documented - it never feels like they are pulling something out of thin air! I have used this commentary in preparing Revelation and Mark and has been outstandingly good on both counts. My only gripe is that it's too short (even though its huge)! It's that good. Now I'm waiting for "The New Testament links in the Old Testament".

    D. A. Carson - Always thorough and fair; even when I disagree with him I can't help but respect his work. Beale - Always thorough and well researched. Combine the two... and WOW, an incredible work is produced. Despite the massive physical size of this commentary, information is easy to find since it follows the New Testament verse by verse. When relevant, the authors provide information on the context of the OT verse behind a NT reference, information on how early Jewish scholars interpreted that OT passage, information on how the NT context seems to adjust or re-interpret the OT passage, and sometimes information on how extra-biblical resources may be alluded to in the NT passages. While most of this information could already be found if you wade through 2-8 technical commentaries for each passage, the simplicity of having such specific treatments of each text is incredibly helpful and time-saving. Occasionally, I even find commentary on certain OT passages that I did not see in any other resources I consulted. The section on the book of Revelation alone makes this commentary worth its price. Even some of the die-hard futurists in my church had to admit that John probably wasn't referring to Apache Helicopters and Nuclear bombs when they saw that most of Revelation's weird symbolism and seemingly bizarre descriptions were actually references to Old Testament passages, ideas, and symbols. Just briefly looking through this resource's columns and seeing that the majority of Revelation's allusions are to books like Exodus and Deuteronomy (rather than Daniel and Ezekiel as many people assume) really helped some people in my church understand the purpose of Revelation better and more aptly apply it to their lives(in my opinion, obviously).
