Overview

William Rainey Harper was a leading American academic of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He applied himself to meeting the needs of modern academia as an administrator and scholar. Harper helped establish the University of Chicago and Bradley University, and was the first president of both schools. Noting the nearly endless supply of introductory grammars for Greek, Latin, and Hebrew studies, Harper concluded that none of these introductory texts provided students and teachers with everything they needed. William R. Harper’s Inductive Methods in Language is his answer to that need. This collection gives you some of the twentieth century’s finest resources for learning Greek, Latin, and Hebrew.

William R. Harper’s Inductive Methods in Language provides lessons on, study methods for, and conceptual explanations of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew grammar. Hebrew Vocabularies presents a thorough vocabulary list to prepare you to read the Old Testament in Hebrew, organizing words based on their frequency, formation, and function. The collection also contains an explanation of the basic grammatical systems of English to help students transition to foreign languages.

With Logos Bible Software, these valuable volumes are enhanced by cutting-edge research tools. After all these years, I'm glad to see Logos is sticking with this and trying to garner enough interest to produce the series. Good for you. Even if the rest of us learn or have learned the languages by the time these books come about, there are others after us who can benefit from them. The $25 USD is an invetment in them. And, as I am from Canada, it's a larger invetment for me than it is for Americans. We used to be at or near par; it ain't that way no more brotheres and sisters.

I have been studying Hebrew for 12 years now and have studied Greek even longer. If I was starting from nothing I would have used these book and Page H Kelley's Biblical Hebrew An Introductory Grammar at the same time. I have had a quick look at the Hebrew book. This book gets you straight into Genesis chapters 1 to 8. This makes the study very interesting because you can see that everything that you learn is actually helping you to read Genesis. I have found in the last year that reading big chunks of text makes you better at the language at a faster rate. You don't need to put too much emphasis on learning vocabulary by this method. All you do is keep reading each section until it feels like you are reading English. This builds up your vocabulary without too much effort. This is an excellent method because if you learn lists of vocabulary there is a filter in your brain that tells you that you don't need to remember it. When you see, hear or smell things there is no filter in your mind that stops you from remembering what you read. That is why you can remember what your conversation was about for a long time. But you won't be able to remember a meaningless list of information very well at all. You won't remember everything that you read but you will remember much more that if you just try to remember lists of vocabulary. I think that these books are probably the best method of learning these languages. I recommend that you find someone else that will learn these languages with you. It will keep your moral up. I found that to be hugely important particularly in the early stages.

Wow, I attended this man's college! I attended Harper College in Palatine, IL, back in the mid 1990's, and I never heard of this man's background, let alone the fact that he was a Christian. Back then, I was far from being a Christian myself however. I was in my 'rebellious times,' as I'd referred to them. Wasn't till 1999 that I truly turned my life over to Jesus Christ. But, I can tell you Mr Harper would have been 'turning in his grave,' had he known just how 'liberal' his college had become. I mean, I was basically being 'indoctrinated' into liberalism, the 'crazed kind' we find today. A lot of people do not realize 'liberalism' was not what is today! Liberalism, or "classical liberalism" was more like what 'conservatism" would be considered today. Thomas Jefferson would have fallen under the "classical liberal" term. I have got to get this set once it's completed! Wow, I'm still in shock. I may have heard something of this man's past, but was a long time ago now, and still as I said, the college even back then was 'extremely liberal' as liberalism is defined in today's society. This will be a 'must buy' for me!
