Overview

Though the Lord relentlessly proclaimed the law of God, He did not come as a political deliverer or social reformer. He did not issue a call for changes, even by peaceful means. Nor did Jesus rally supporters in a grandiose attempt to “capture the culture” for morality or greater political and religious freedoms. Rather, His divine calling was to rescue the lost souls of individual men and women from sin and hell.

A certain amount of healthy and balanced concern about current trends in government and the community is acceptable, as long as we realize that such interest is not vital to our spiritual lives, our righteous testimony or the advancement of the kingdom of Christ. Above all, the believer’s political involvement should never displace the priority of preaching and teaching the gospel because the morality and righteousness that God seeks is the result of salvation and sanctification.

—John MacArthur

In Why Government Can’t Save You (An Alternative to Political Activism), author John MacArthur illustrates through Scripture that, regardless of the numerous immoral, unjust, and ungodly failures of secular government, believers are to pray and seek to influence the world for Christ by godly, selfless, and peaceful living under that authority, not by protests against the government or by acts of civil disobedience. Dr. MacArthur will explore these areas:

  • Christians’ Responsibility to authority
  • How and why to support our leaders
  • How to live righteously in a pagan culture
  • The principle of paying taxes
  • Jesus’ lessons on tax exemptions
  • The biblical purpose of government
  • The principle and reasons for civil obedience
To devote all, or even most, or our time, energy, money, and strategy to putting a facade of morality on the world or the appearance of ‘rightness’ over our governmental and political institutions is to badly misunderstand our roles as Christians in a spiritually lost world.

—John MacArthur

In this book find out your Christian responsibility to government and political causes.

Abortion. Gun control. Gay rights. Welfare reform. School prayer. Today’s political arena has become a minefield of emotionally charged issues.

As a citizen of heaven living as a citizen on earth, how should you respond? Is political involvement the most effective way to change society? Should changing society be the driving purpose behind the church?

Why Government Can’t Save You answers those questions and more. You’ll learn what Scripture says about the Christian and politics as you discover the radical role you do play in transforming the culture.

“But the ideal human government can ultimately do nothing to advance God’s kingdom, and the worst, most despotic worldly government in the end cannot halt the power of the Holy Spirit or the spread of God’s Word.” (Page 7)

“First, by looking to human means to reform society and establish Christian values, we’ve denigrated God’s sovereignty over human history and events.” (Page viii)

“But the inspired writers, early in Old Testament history, recognized there is one exception or limitation to our divinely mandated obligation of civil obedience: whenever an ordinance or official command would require that we disobey God’s will or His Word.” (Page 22)

“Sadly, those believers have often displayed mean-spirited attitudes and utilized the same kinds of worldly tactics as their unbelieving opponents. The problem with this overall approach should be obvious—believers become antagonistic toward the very lost people God has called them to love and reach with the gospel.” (Page 5)

“I’m concerned about the prevailing mindset that makes political and social activism the primary business of Christianity and reduces faith in Christ to just another political force.” (Page viii)
