Overview

Spanning 66 books and thousands of years, the Bible can be difficult for new readers to approach on a big-picture level. However, keeping overarching themes in mind lends crucial insight and structure to studying the Bible—new and experienced readers alike will benefit from seeing the major threads that tie together Scripture's narrative.

Written with a large dose of liveliness and humor, Storylines: Your Map to Understanding the Bible lays out six main themes of the Bible. Authors Mike Pilvachi and Andy Croft identify the following themes as “storylines”: Jesus, covenant, presence, kingdom, salvation, and worship. Giving a fresh look at each of these narrative threads, the authors reveal a method of studying Scripture that makes it live and breathe, illuminating how it is relevant to life today. With a conversational feel throughout, the authors argue that in grasping these big ideas of the Bible, your study become more holistic and fruitful. Storylines also includes appendices, which give a twenty-page summary of the Bible and a accessible discussion of how it came to be in its present form.

Top Highlights

“the best way for us to get to grips with the whole Bible is to understand the whole story.” (Page 10)

“Church services, youth group meetings, and Bible studies usually focus on only a small section of the story. This is definitely important, and because the Bible is so rich, we need to do this. At the same time, it can mean we grow up as Christians without ever getting the big picture. We can sit through Sunday school for years, trot out the right answers, have a nice discussion about particular biblical characters—and still not ‘get it.’ Going through the Bible one snapshot at a time is like watching a movie frame by frame. Sometimes we just need to press play and watch it from start to finish. Then when we do come back to watching the individual frames, we’re much more likely to understand them because we ‘get’ the big picture.” (Page 10)

“These days there seem to be lots of followers of the God of the Bible who don’t know where to begin reading it, who don’t understand what’s in it, and who are intimidated by it.” (Page 9)

“The book of Isaiah begins before the exile in Babylon and then continues during the exile.” (Page 29)

“in the Old Testament he’s concealed, in the New Testament he’s revealed” (Page 14)
