In an increasingly broken world filled with hate and violence, God's plan from the beginning was to save and restore the world to the glory for which he had created it. This simple plan has not changed with the evolution of sin, time, or man's rejection of his creator. Rather, God's simple twofold plan of redemption included both a commandment to love the creator with all one's heart, mind, soul, and strength, and a commandment to love one's neighbor as one's self. Neither commandment stands in isolation, for one cannot fully love others without a consuming love for God, and neither can one completely love God without a love for the neighbor created by God. The answer to hate is love; the answer to war is love; the answer to violence is love; and the answer to all of societal disfunction is love. The answer is not a commandment to like God and others, because one only likes others because of likeness. Rather, love is a choice. A choice to love what you don't like. A choice to love what you don't understand. A choice to love until the God you love sets everything right in eternity.

“The implications of Joey Peyton’s invitation to embrace and embody the Second Commandment are staggering, especially (but not only) in the culmination of his biblical, theological, and practical argument to love our immigrant neighbor—including our racial, ethnic, political, and religious others. This volume thus signals the emergence of Pentecostal missiological voices in the broader public square that urge not just listening to the many tongues but also loving them as Jesus would!”

—Amos Yong, professor of theology and mission, Fuller Theological Seminary

“As I read The Second Commandment, even after thirty years of ministry, I was challenged and convicted afresh with the mandate that my love for God is not genuine unless it is expressed in my love for neighbor. I encourage you to allow Joey Peyton to take you back to the Scriptures and the practices they call us to in loving the person next to us, whoever they are. I wholeheartedly endorse The Second Commandment.”

—Steven J. Beardsley, former academic dean, Urshan Graduate School of Theology

Joey R. Peyton received an MTS in 2005 and MDiv in 2006 from Urshan Graduate School of Theology; a DMin from Eden Theological Seminary in 2013, with an emphasis in pastoral care; and a PhD in intercultural studies from the Assembly of God Theological Seminary in 2022, with an emphasis in pastoral care.
