Overview

Rest and Redemption was first published by Andrews University Press in 1978, authored by a young scholar who many years later became the longest-serving president of Andrews University. In celebration of the grand opening of the Andreasen Center for Wellness in 2019, Andrews University was pleased to re-issue Dr. Andreasen’s long-ago insights on the meaning of the ultimate wellness practice: the Sabbath.

  • Explains the ultimate wellness practice: the Sabbath.
  • Celebrates the creative God we serve.
  • Explores Sabbath through worship, reflection, and community.
The Sabbath is about the creation, celebration, renewal, and redemption of the whole person. It is one of the important pillars of the Seventh-day Adventist belief system and our faith. In a very real way the Sabbath defines us and in that definition declares our commitment to celebrating the creative God we serve. That celebration occurs through resting every seventh day when we find wellness and wholeness through worship, reflection, and community. It is about how we live now but also how we will live as community through redemption in the world beyond.

–From the Foreword by Andrea Luxton, president of Andrews University

Niels-Erik Andreasen, an Old Testament scholar and leader in Adventist higher education, served as president of Andrews University from 1994 to 2016. Prior to his tenure at Andrews, he served as president of Walla Walla University, dean of the school of religion at Loma Linda University, religion professor at Loma Linda and Pacific Union College, and visiting lecturer at schools in several countries. He received a B.A. from Newbold College, an M.A. and B.Div. from Andrews University, and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. His dissertation, The Old Testament Sabbath, was published by the Society of Biblical Literature in 1972. He has authored two other books: The Christian Use of Time (Abingdon, 1978) and Rest and Redemption (Andrews University Press, 1978/2019).
