George Campbell (1719–1796) was a Scottish philosopher, minister, and professor of divinity, and an important figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, he was educated at Marischal College and King’s College. Campbell served as a parish minister in rural Aberdeenshire for 10 years, where he began his lifelong project of translating the Gospels from the Greek. In 1759, Campbell became principal at Marischal College, and was a founding member of the Aberdeen Philosophical Society. In 1770, Campbell succeeded Alexander Gerard as professor of divinity at Marischal, where he continued to teach and write until his retirement in 1795.
