Why use multiple translations? Using multiple translations while you study will give you a well-rounded understanding of the text at hand. Though it’s good to have a primary version for memorization and meditation, reading from different translations demonstrates sound scholarship and can help you better understand a passage by seeing what the biblical author meant in new ways.
The goal of every Bible translation is to balance faithfulness to the wording of the original language with readability in everyday English. Typically, each translation will lean more toward faithfulness to the wording or readability.
Functional (also known as “thought-for-thought” or “dynamic”) Bible translations try to reproduce the original text using more modern language to communicate the broader meaning of the text. These prioritize readability, and though they provide an easy-to-read version of Scripture (and thus tend to be easier to understand), they do this by occasionally being a bit freer to interpret than formal translations are.
The Functional (Thought-for-Thought) Translation Bible Bundle 2 includes the New Living Translation (NLT), New International Reader’s Version (NIrV), Christian Standard Bible (CSB), Good News Bible (GNB), and Contemporary English Version (CEV).
- New Living Translation (NLT) - The New Living Translation provides a wonderful balance of readability and authority. It is easy to understand, poetically beautiful, powerful, and emotive. At the same time, due to the careful work of 90 leading Bible scholars, it is accurate to the original Greek and Hebrew text.
- New International Reader’s Version (NIrV) - The New International Reader’s Version is a simplification of the New International Version (NIV).
