Do you feel down, depressed, or hopeless? Have you lost interest or pleasure in doing things? Do you know someone who might be depressed and want to help? Are you a Christian healer--health care provider, counselor, or clergy - and want to expand your knowledge base on depression? If you answer yes to any of these questions, this book may be of help to you. As a Christian family physician and educator for forty-three years and with seminary training, I have found that treating the whole person with clinical depression is the most likely way to be healed from this dreadful illness. There are now many real helps for those with clinical depression from the medical (including psychiatric), counseling, and pastoral care professions, especially from the Bible itself. I have suffered from seven clinical depressions, and most of my siblings and children have experienced at least one clinical depression--so I know what the issues are that face those of us who are depressed. I have also included real life examples of Christians who have suffered from depression, including me, as well as helpful quotations from Scripture and special prayers for those who are depressed.
“As a pastor and therapist, I would eagerly put this book into
the hands of every depressed Christian and their spouse, friends,
relatives, doctor, pastor, and therapist. I am sure that it will
open eyes and hearts in order to better enfold those who suffer
from depression and energize the path to healing. Dr. White brings
understanding of the pit of deep depression compassionately into
the lap of the common person and fills the reader with godly hope
for those who suffer this darkness.”
—Ken Nydam, Pastor and Licensed Mental Health Therapist
“You hold a treasure in your hands, because of what it is and for
whom it is written. A book like this has been a long time in
coming. Dr. White’s book represents over a century of development
in modern medicine and psychology. . . . So, whether you
are a sufferer yourself, family or friend, or a medical
practitioner, I recommend to you this well-done work on healing a
broken mind.”
—Frank Dennehy, MD, FAAFP, Family Physician and Residency Program
Director, Virginia
“You hold in your hand (or device) a powerful testimony and
treatise on the power of prayer, counseling, and medical therapy
for depression. I was one of the many who was praying for Dr. Andy
White’s healing from cancer and depression in 2013, while working
with his brother Russ at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya. Andy’s personal
lifetime experience with depression makes this book a tremendous
labor of love and a must-read for healthcare professionals as well
as patients, their families, their pastors, and others engaged in
mental healthcare inside and outside the church, to the glory of
God.”
