Overview

Christian leadership is often likened to the peaceful image of a shepherd leading his sheep. But the truth is that sheep tend to wander toward trouble, and shepherds don’t always handle the challenges of their job with grace and ease.

The Painful Side of Leadership encourages and equips Christian leaders with biblical insights to better manage painful ministry circumstances, relationships, and choices. Author and seminary president Jeff Iorg writes candidly throughout to those who may feel beaten up by their mistakes, their critics, or having to make unpopular decisions. His insights are framed with chapters about why painful things happen to Christian leaders in the first place and the hope that God always provides when a leader is hurting.

Top Highlights

“Second, tired leaders are headed for burnout and depression.” (source)

“Another key discipline for leaders is Sabbath rest” (source)

“Other disciplines are important for leaders—Scripture memory, fasting, and solitude to name a few.” (source)

“Disappointment is a result of unmet expectations, not measuring of actual performance.” (source)

“Many leaders have a bigger vision than can be assimilated and lived by their followers. When leaders lose touch with this reality, they become angry and their followers become frustrated. The leader’s challenge is to maintain a healthy tension between vision and reality, between what can be and what is. Leaders must plan for the best, expect the worst, and adjust to what actually happens.” (source)

Dr. Jeff Iorg became the seventh president of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in August, 2004. His background includes experience as a pastor, writer, church planter, and denominational leader. He came to the Seminary from Vancouver, Washington, where he was Executive Director-Treasurer of the Northwest Baptist Convention. During his tenure, the Northwest Baptist Center, including the facilities for the Pacific Northwest Campus, was constructed. Before his leadership at the state convention, Dr. Iorg was pastor of two churches. In 1989, he moved to Oregon to plant a church. The result was Greater Gresham Baptist Church in Gresham, Oregon, which is now one of the largest Southern Baptist churches in Oregon. This church helped create a new paradigm for “culture current” church planting in the Northwest. He also served as pastor of Green Valley Baptist Church in Missouri and as a staff pastor at Elmcrest Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas. From 1990-2004, he taught preaching, evangelism, and leadership courses as an adjunct professor for Golden Gate Seminary. Dr. Iorg and his wife, Ann, have three adult children – Casey, Melody, and Caleb. His hobbies include traveling, reading, and umpiring baseball. His personal ministry includes outreach to the baseball community in the Bay Area.
