William Stringfellow, activist lawyer and advocate for the underprivileged of New York, was either embraced warmly or rejected as a radical by Christians in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s when he was writing. Nonetheless, his writings remain timeless, pertinent, convicting, and spiritual directives. Taking his hopes in the two Advents of Jesus from out of his writings gives us a piercingly dynamic devotional for Advent. These readings will make one think, pray, and act. Possibly his words are most applicable today.
“Picking up this book, I was expecting some cold, suffocated theological lingo from a lawyer’s viewpoint. Instead, I found myself walking through a country meadow surrounded by the fragrance of truth. The author evaporated, and I had a warm experience with the truth. A book is often more about the author than the subject, not so with this book. An authentic Christian with a passion and hunger for Christ will greatly benefit from this book.”
—James L. Snyder, author of The Life of A. W. Tozer: In Pursuit Of God
“Western worldview declares human intellect the author of our lives and superior over all forms of knowing, including supernatural revelation. Too often, this naturalistic worldview has crept into church teaching, diluting the authority of God and his word and contaminating our thinking. This contamination has left us feeling disoriented. In An Advent Alphabet, Dr. Mackey’s spiritual direction will illuminate the passageway from self-orientation back to God-orientation, inviting us to a revived and life-giving faith.”
—Denise E. Hirschlein, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Nyack College
