Overview

Theology and Sanity is one of the most popular books by noted Catholic theologian and apologist Frank J. Sheed. Ideal for the layman, it shows the practical aspects of theology in the life of a Christian believer. Sheed’s logic, clarity, and simplicity permeate this eminently readable book. Drawing from his 50 years of street-corner preaching, as well as his long career as an author, lecturer, and publisher, Sheed understands and effectively communicates the importance of theology and its relationship to living sanely in today’s world—providing a brilliant synthesis of the Catholic view of life.

Top Highlights

“The one infinite nature is totally possessed by three distinct persons. Here we must be quite accurate: the three persons are distinct, but not separate; and they do not share the divine nature, but each possesses it totally.” (Page 96)

“But in the Blessed Trinity, that is not so. The three Persons are God, not by the possession of equal and similar natures, but by the possession of one single nature; they do in fact, what our three men could not do, know with the same intellect and love with the same will. They are three Persons, but they are not three Gods; they are One God.” (Page 98)

“weakens and dwindles, we cannot turn to him for renewal. But in the Body, we” (Page 317)

“God is one, but it is not the oneness of infinite solitude: it is the oneness of one infinite Godhead triply uttered: a communication of infinite truth and infinite love among three, infinite self-revelation, infinite self-donation, companionship at the level of divinity.” (Page 122)

“Whereas appropriation to one Person or another continually reminds us of the distinction: and the specific appropriations that we make remind us that the Father is Origin and Power; the Son, Knowledge or Wisdom; the Holy Spirit, Love.” (Page 120)
