Overview

Edited for Modern Readers, These Wartime Sermons from John Owen Explore God’s Judgment and Sovereignty

Regarded as one of the greatest theologians in history, 17th-century pastor John Owen wrote extensively on holiness, Scripture, the Trinity, missions, and ecclesiology. His classic works—which have inspired Christian thinkers including Charles Spurgeon, J. I. Packer, and John Piper—remain influential, but until now haven’t been offered in an easy-to-read collection.

The Complete Works of John Owen is a 40-volume project that brings together all of Owen’s original theological writing, reformatted for modern readers. Volume 18 includes 5 sermons Owen preached to encourage political figures, army chaplains, and academics during the English Civil Wars. With extensive introductions by editor Martyn C. Cowan, this volume also includes outlines, footnotes, and other supporting resources.

Owen ranks at the top of the classic Reformed writers whose reading of Scripture have most shaped my own faith and practice. He discloses points that I often miss, and he does so in a heart-igniting way that makes truth both enjoyable and edifying. Until now, trudging through the outdated format of Owen’s work has been a daunting task. I am thrilled to see this new edition of his complete works. If you want a faith that is as much for the heart as the mind, then read Owen!

—Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California

Through the good work of Lee Gatiss and Shawn Wright, Owen’s works are being brought out in a new forty-volume set, with fresh typesetting and formatting, to make his work more readable today. (One entire volume of indices makes the whole set accessible!) Owen has long been one of the most admired of the Puritan fathers, providing help on everything from fighting sin to understanding the cross. The thought of more people reading his work today makes my heart sing!

—Mark Dever, Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC

The appearance of these forty volumes deserves to be heralded as one of the major Christian publishing events of our time. It surely indicates that Owen, whose writings were little known until resurrected in the 1960s, is here to stay among the ranks of the greatest theologians ever to work on English soil. This new edition has been carefully and informatively edited by a team of scholars who not only stand on the shoulders of past editors but take their earlier labors a step further. Their work and the layout of these volumes will help readers more easily appreciate Owen’s towering intellect and grasp the power of his theological reasoning, pastoral insight, and spiritual wisdom. This edition will bring fresh delight to those who are already familiar with him. At the same time, less experienced readers, on their first ascent of Mount Owen, will be helped to enjoy new views: of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; of the gospel, the church, and themselves; and of the life of grace and faith. Here the theological air is indeed bracing, and the climb can be challenging to both the mind and the spirit, but with these volumes in hand, the experience should prove unforgettable.

—Sinclair B. Ferguson, Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Teaching Fellow, Ligonier Ministries

John Owen

John Owen (1616–1683) is considered one of the most influential and inspiring theologians of the seventeenth century. He entered Queen's College, Oxford, at the age of twelve and completed his M.A. in classics and theology at the age of nineteen.

His first parish was at Fordham in Essex where he became convinced that the Congregational polity was the scriptural form of church government. In the 1640s he became chaplain to Oliver Cromwell, the new "Protector of England," and traveled with him on his expeditions to Ireland and Scotland.

In 1651 he was appointed dean of Christ Church and in 1652 made Vice-Chancellor of Oxford—positions which allowed him to train ministers for the Cromwellian state church. Owen later moved to London and led the Puritans through the bitter years of religious and political persecution—experiences which shaped his theological inquiry, pastoral reflection, and preaching. Owen authored one of the richest commentaries on the book of Hebrews, An Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews which are also included in The Works of John Owen along with sermons and essays.
