TOPIC OF THE MONTH
Spiritual Formation
How do you grow in the Christian life?
Throughout the millennia, countless pastors, authors, and teachers have weighed in, drawing on the testimony of Scripture. Ultimately, Christians are called to become more like Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 3:18). And one way we experience the transforming power of God’s grace is through spiritual disciplines.
What are spiritual disciplines?
Donald S. Whitney is the author of the modern classic Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. In an interview with Desiring God, he lays out a summary of what the spiritual disciplines are and why they matter. They aren’t good deeds we do to earn God’s favor; they are time-tested practices that open us up to understand Christ’s grace, helping us trust more fully in God for our spiritual formation. Whitney explains:
So you read the Bible. That is something you do. That is a spiritual discipline. You meditate on Scripture. You pray, fast, worship, serve, learn, and so forth. These are activities. Now the goal of practicing any given discipline is not about doing as much as it is about being: being like Jesus, being with Jesus. But the biblical way to grow in being more like Jesus is through the rightly motivated doing of the biblical, spiritual disciplines.
