How to Search the Original Languages with Logos

search original languages with Logos

Today’s post is from Morris Proctor, certified and authorized trainer for Logos Bible Software. Morris, who has trained thousands of Logos users at his two-day Camp Logos seminars, provides many training materials.

One of my favorite verses is Mark 1:35 which states in the NASB:

In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.

The Greek word translated praying is the lemma proseuchomai (προσεύχομαι), the most frequently used Greek word for pray in the New Testament.

Let’s say we’d like to discover other places in the Bible where this verb is used in the context of Jesus’ praying. That is very simple with a Clause Search along with a little help from the context menu.

  • Open an English Bible with the reverse interlinear option like the NASBLEBKJVNKJV, or ESV
  • Navigate to the verse Mark 1:35 (A)

1M

  • Click the Search icon in the upper left of the main Logos window
  • Select Clause as the search type (B)
  • Select All Passages as the verse range (C)
  • Select The Greek New Testament: SBL Edition as the resource to search (D)
  • Click the search example Subject and Greek Verb (E) which places this query in the box: subject:Jesus verb-lemma:λαμβάνω (F)

3MP

This search query locates all the clauses in which the person Jesus (regardless of how he is referenced: LordChrist, he, etc.) is the subject and some form of the Greek lemma lambano is the verb.

We now need to replace lambano with proseuchomai. Here’s an easy way to do just that:

  • Remove λαμβάνω from the search box (G)

4MP

  • Right click on the word praying in Mark 1:35 (H)
  • Notice on the context menu to the right of the Greek lemma is the transliteration of the Greek word (I)

5MP

  • Type the transliteration of the Greek lemma in the search box (J)
  • Select from the drop down list subject:Jesus verb-lemma:προσεύχομαι (pray) (K)

6MP

  • Press the Enter key to generate the search results
  • Place any Bible(s) you want in the Bible box to see the results in English as well as Greek (L)

7MP

We’re now locating all the clauses in the New Testament in which the person Jesus is the subject and some form of proseuchomai is the verb!
