How to Find Old Testament Quotes in the New Testament

I’m currently assisting a young preacher with his sermon on Matthew 5:43-48. The passage begins like others before it with the phrase, “You have heard that it was said,” followed by what specifically was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” (esv) This of course begs the question, “Was this an accurate quotation from the Old Testament or did the religious leaders of the day alter it?” In other words, what is the source of the statement?

A resource to help answer the question is called Old Testament Quotations and Allusions in the New Testament which is a Bible harmony contained in all Logos base packages. The steps that follow will show you a nice way to quickly access the resource:

• Open the Library
• Click Prioritize in the upper right of the Library (A)
• Type this text in the Find box: type:harmony (B)
• Drag Old Testament Quotations and Allusions in the New Testament (C) placing it underneath your Preferred Bible (first Bible in the list) (D)

• Close the Library
• Open any Bible to Matthew 5:43 (E)
• Right click on any word within Matthew 5:43 (F)
• Select the reference Matthew 5:43 from the right side of the Context menu (G)
• Select Old Testament Quotations and Allusions in the New Testament from the left side of the Context menu (H)

• Notice the resource opens showing the Old Testament source verse of Leviticus 19:18 (I) along with quotations or allusions to it in the New Testament (J)

The key to making this tip work is making sure you select the biblical reference on the right side of the Context menu. Try this trick when you’re in any passage, Old or New Testament. If your verse is mentioned in the resource, the harmony will appear on the left side of the Context menu!
