Logos Research Systems Commissions New Hebrew-English Interlinear Bible
- Company Announces [Lexham] Bible Reference Series Imprint -

Rome, Italy, April 16, 2004 — The first new Hebrew-English interlinear Bible to be published in 17 years is being created by a team of the world’s top Hebrew scholars specifically for Logos Bible Software Series X, Logos Research Systems, Inc., announced today at a conference of Bible translators held at the University of Rome. The [Lexham] Hebrew-English Interlinear Bible is the first in a planned series of biblical language tools commissioned by the company and exclusive to Logos Bible Software.

The [Lexham] Hebrew-English Interlinear Bible is a new breed of interlinear, designed for electronic reference and based on the latest linguistic research. Rather than present a single gloss for each Hebrew word, it will take advantage of the digital medium and offer multiple layers of English glosses that reflect the complexity of biblical Hebrew language structure. The goal of this "grid" approach is to provide interlinear translations at the lexical, word, phrase and clause level, as well as a wide range of annotations.

"A complete understanding of biblical Hebrew is out of reach for many translators and clergy. But the [Lexham] Hebrew-English Interlinear Bible will be a helpful tool that’s based on current research into discourse analysis, can be used intuitively, and corresponds to the way people actually read the text," said Christo van der Merwe, professor of biblical Hebrew grammar in the Department of Ancient Studies, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, and lead editor for the Hebrew-English interlinear project.

[Lexham] Bible Reference Series

The [Lexham] Bible Reference Series imprint will be placed on select titles as they are created, and a few existing titles will be added to the series. All titles published under the imprint will be commissioned by Logos and scholarly in nature.

"The [Lexham] Bible Reference Series will take Logos further into content creation than we’ve ever gone. I’m happy to play a part in expanding knowledge in this area, and it’s a privilege to be working with some of the top minds in the field," said Bob Pritchett, president, Logos Research Systems.

The [Lexham] Hebrew-English Interlinear Bible will initially be made available to customers via the Logos prepublication program, which works like a subscription plan. Pre-orders will be placed at a discounted price, then converted to actual orders when the product ships. The company also plans to roll out the product in stages as work is completed on each biblical book and each syntactical level. Thus far, Genesis and Proverbs have been completed, with glosses at the word and morpheme levels.
