How to Find Significant Prepositional Phrases in Johannine Literature

I was recently reading 1 John in which I came to the phrase in the world in 1 John 2:15. From my research, I realized John frequently uses the Greek word kosmos usually translated world. During my study I asked a few questions such as:

  • Where else in John’s writings does he use kosmos?
  • What other prepositional phrases does John use with kosmos such as in the world, from the world, into the world, etc?

Such detailed questions are actually very easy to answer with the Guide, Bible Word Study, which is available in Logos 7.

Try this:

  • Open an interlinear English Bible like the NASB (A)
  • Navigate to 1 John 2:15 (B)
  • Right click on an occurrence of world in the verse (C)
  • Select from the right side of the Context menu the lemma kosmos (D)
  • Select from the left side of the Context menu Bible World Study (E)

1

  • Select the verse range drop down list on the Guide (F)
  • Select Johannine Literature from the list (G)

2

  • Notice the Translation section displays every occurrence of kosmos in John’s writings (H)
  • Navigate to the Preposition Use section which shows all of the Greek prepositions used in conjunction with kosmos in John’s writings (please note only the ones in black are used with kosmos in John’s writings) (I)

3

  • Click a preposition in black text like the one (ek) in the 3 o’clock position (J)
  • Notice below the image the verses in which that prepositional phrase appears (K)
  • Work your way around the image to discover all of the prepositional phrases with kosmos in John’s writings (L)

Even though prepositions are arguably the smallest words among the parts of speech, they carry a big punch!

Be sure to check out phrases like:

  • in the world
  • of the world
  • from the world
  • into the world
  • for the world
