About the Congregation for Catholic Education

The Congregation for Catholic Education began in 1588 under Pope Sixtus V to oversee academic studies at the University of Rome, the University of Paris, the University of Salamanca, and many others. The congregation has authority over all educational institutions depending on ecclesiastical authorities, over seminaries and institutes of higher learning, and over houses of formation of religious and secular institutes. This is executed through three different offices: the Office for Seminaries, the Office for Universities, and the Office for Catholic Schools. Within this congregation exists the Pontifical Work of Priestly Vocations.
