Overview

The Mystical Works of Evelyn Underhill comprises the most important works of one of the foremost writers on spirituality and Christian mysticism of the early twentieth century. The collection opens with Underhill’s most widely read work: Mysticism. A general introduction to the concept, followed by a comprehensive exploration of the nature and development of human mystical consciousness, this work defined a wing of the Christian religion that found its footing at the turn of the century. The subsequent 10 volumes articulate the finer points of Underhill’s religious philosophy, elucidating the place of mysticism within the personal, practical, historical, and institutional realms. This volume contains the text of Evelyn Underhill’s Practical Mysticism: A Little Book for Normal People.

“Wisdom is the fruit of communion; ignorance the inevitable portion of those who ‘keep themselves to themselves,’ and stand apart, judging, analysing the things which they have never truly known.” (Page 4)

“What, out of the mass of material offered to it, shall consciousness seize upon—with what aspects of the universe shall it ‘unite’?” (Page 5)

“The religious contemplative has this further attraction for us: that he is by nature a missionary as well.” (Page 47)

“Real knowledge, since it always implies an intuitive sympathy more or less intense, is far more accurately suggested by the symbols of touch and taste than by those of hearing and sight.” (Pages 4–5)
