Overview

Pentecostalism is the most rapidly growing branch of Christianity since the 20th century, yet it does not lend itself well to a singular doctrine and there is, therefore, no single comprehensive account of Pentecostal theology worldwide. Wolfgang Vondey suggests an account of Pentecostal theology that is genuine to Pentecostals worldwide while allowing for different adaptation and explication among the various Pentecostal groups. He argues that Pentecostal theology is fundamentally concerned with the renewal of the Christian life identified by the transforming work of the Holy Spirit and directed toward the kingdom of God. The book unfolds in two main parts illustrating the full gospel story and theology. Eleven chapters identify the spiritual underpinnings and motivations for Pentecostal theology, formulate a Pentecostal theology of action, translate, apply, and exemplify Pentecostal practices and experiences, and integrate Pentecostal theology in the wider Christian tradition.

“From a theological perspective, I suggest, Pentecostalism can be identified by the day of Pentecost as the concern for an immediate encounter with God through the Spirit of Christ manifested in discernible signs and wonders as evidence of God’s transforming and redeeming presence directing all of life towards the kingdom of God.” (Page 4)

“Pentecost is the core theological symbol of Pentecostal theology.” (Page 11)

“In this sense, Pentecostal theology is not strictly dogmatic; it does not seek articulation of doctrine as the primary task of theology.20 Instead, Pentecostal theology seeks a relationship between spirituality and doctrine so that living theology becomes a constant and reciprocal back-and-forth movement between beliefs, affections, and actions, on the one hand, and the articulation of doctrine, on the other.” (Page 17)

“We might say that Pentecost is the very prolegomenon of Pentecostal theology, because Pentecostalism is a form of living fundamentally concerned with the renewing work of God as it emerges from the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.” (Page 12)

“Pentecostal spirituality arises out of Pentecost: this kind of spirituality is not simply any form of exuberant experience or revival but the expression of a personal participation of the individual and the community in the biblical story of God actualized in Jesus Christ and made possible by the Holy Spirit.” (Pages 14–15)
