Top Highlights

“Unclean here—eating with unclean hands—is not a question of hygiene. This is ceremonial purity: being right with God or being pure in your body when you do certain acts.” (source)

“Where was Mark’s community? Strong church tradition points to Rome as the place of writing of Mark’s Gospel.” (source)

“But, in fact, in Jesus’ day, there was no Needle’s Eye gate. That is a myth” (source)

“Why, then, does Jesus command silence on so many of these occasions? I think it becomes clear throughout the Gospel of Mark what the people are expecting of a messiah. They’re expecting a conquering messiah who will defeat the Romans. Jesus is going to redefine what messiahship means. He doesn’t want to get lots of public acclaim about His messiahship before He’s able to define what it means to be the Messiah. He keeps a damper on it. He keeps it quiet as much as possible. That’s the reason, we believe, for the commands to silence.” (source)

“Jesus also shows more emotions—His humanity—more in Mark’s Gospel than in the other Gospels. Jesus gets angry at times” (source)
