Overview

Dr. Craig Keener, award-winning scholar and author of one of the largest and most thoroughly documented Acts commentaries available, provides students with an introduction to the book of Acts which focuses on such fundamentals as genre and historical context. He also explores key themes including mission, ethnic reconciliation, and evangelism, and discusses the Spirit’s power to bring these about.

Top Highlights

“Actually, it’s the history of early Christian mission” (source)

“The majority view of scholars today is that the book of Acts is historiography.” (source)

“History must deal with what happened, not just with what might happen” (source)

“Sir Arthur Darby Nock, one of the leading classicists of the 20th century, pointed out that as far as he could recall, there was at most one exception, in all of non-fictitious literature, of the ‘we’ being used fictitiously. He concluded that the ‘we’ here represents eyewitness testimony, which actually remains the majority view among scholars.” (source)

“Well, then he dismisses eyewitness testimony, even from potentially credible eyewitnesses, because it violates uniform human experience. That’s a circular argument that presupposes a theological stance.” (source)
