Overview

Carefully documented and compassionate, this book explores how early Christians would have understood the statements of Jesus and Paul on divorce and remarriage. Keener then builds a soundly scriptural view of divorce and remarriage—a view that reminds the church that all of its members are forgiven people.

“But the principal point is unmistakable: divorce is an evil to be avoided at all costs, and only when the salvation of the marriage is truly impossible is it valid. And the salvation of the marriage is impossible only if one party in the marriage has unilaterally decided to end it by seeking to leave or by acting adulterously. In such a case, divorce is the formal declaration of what is already true in fact: the marriage is broken, and the guilty party is responsible for it.” (Page 36)

“Second, if the exception permits divorce, the average first-century Jewish reader would assume that it permitted remarriage, unless explicitly informed otherwise;85 part of the very nature of the divorce document was to free the wife to remarry.” (Page 34)

“In other words, Paul grants an exception to Jesus’ general principle against divorce and remarriage, and the exception allows that a believer might be divorced or deserted by a spouse against his or her will.36 These circumstances are not the believer’s choice, and the believer is therefore ‘not under bondage’ (v. 15). An innocent party unable to preserve the marriage against the spouse’s will is not to be held responsible for the divorce or forbidden to remarry. For our churches to hold the innocent party responsible and forbid remarriage is to deny Paul’s teaching and to oppress the broken.” (Page 55)

“Jesus articulated the principle that divorce was wrong, but his earliest followers understood that there could be innocent parties in the breakup of a marriage. Matthew shows that the partner’s unfaithfulness is a valid grounds for divorce, and that a valid divorce cancels the marriage bond, allowing the innocent party to remarry in exactly the same way any single person can marry. The radical demands of the Kingdom prohibit sin; they do not condemn the innocent.” (Page 37)

A first-rate piece of pastoral scholarship.
