Overview

In LD101, Dr. Irving introduces the critical subject of ministry leadership. Effective leadership is an essential component of any healthy organization, but what makes ministry leadership unique? In addition to providing surveys of contemporary leadership theories and obstacles to effective leadership, Dr. Irving explains the uniquely Christian approach to leadership, offering biblical examples from both the Old Testament and the New Testament. This course also demonstrates how the radical nature of servant leadership can transform your ministry.

Top Highlights

“I’ll end this section with one final element, something called ‘fusion leadership.’ This is just kind of a metaphorical discussion by Daft and Lengel. It’s the idea of a fission comparison to fusion. Fission is energy by splitting the nucleus of an atom. Well, some of the history that we’ve looked at—scientific management, division of labor, individual accountability, and efficiencies and control—are a bit more division-of-labor approaches, it’s about splitting.” (source)

“So there are four key variables that are noted along path-goal leadership’s trajectory. First is defining the goals—where are we aiming people along the way?” (source)

“Why leadership, why now?—because more than ever before, leaders need to be really good exegetes, they need to learn how to interpret. Yes, they need to interpret the Bible well, understanding the principles of Scripture that support the life and vitality of the people of God in our world. But it’s not only being biblical exegetes, it’s also being good cultural exegetes, as well as good exegetes of the people with whom we are working. Are we learning to be those who interpret well—Scripture, culture, and the people that we are leading? This is a unique calling that leaders have in our day. Ministry leaders need to be adaptable and flexible and drawing upon and paying attention to these unique spheres.” (source)

“‘[Everybody] thinks of changing humanity, and nobody thinks of changing himself.’” (source)

“In verse 14, we read simply that ‘they did not ask counsel from the Lord.’ How often in our own lives and leadership are we drawing upon our own due diligence? We’re looking to the practical realities around us, but failing to actually go to the Lord, failing to actually inquire, to pray over a matter, to seek God’s heart.” (source)
