Overview

For nearly 30 years, the Journal of Biblical Counseling (previously the Journal of Pastoral Practice) of CCEF (the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation) has provided a forum for biblical counseling’s development and application. The journal’s mission is to develop clear thinking and effective practice in biblical counseling through articles that faithfully bring the God of truth, mercy, and power to the issues faced by ministries of counseling and discipleship.

“But the problem with using the above arguments as reasons for staying in an abusive relationship is that God never calls us to tolerate violence if it can be avoided. We are not called to passively accept every form of unjust pain that comes our way.” (Volume 28, Number 2, Page 10)

“Some have even misapplied 1 Peter 1:6 to the context of abuse. ‘In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.’ This verse has been grossly misused to tell women they should simply accept abuse and use the suffering as an opportunity to grow in their faith.” (Volume 28, Number 2, Page 10)

“The full arc of Scripture, from beginning to end, tells us this: we were not created to suffer. God is grieved by our suffering and longs for the day when we will be fully delivered from it.” (Volume 28, Number 2, Page 11)

“The lie espoused by contemporary culture is that our existence—the things we do, the experiences we have, the ensuing thoughts and feelings—defines who we are, our essence.” (Volume 28, Number 2, Page 55)

“More than trying to reform the abuser, or staying because marriage is forever, or staying to show forgiveness—it is better to be safe.” (Volume 28, Number 2, Page 16)
