Overview

The Gospel of John strives to persuade the hearts and minds of the undecided that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God, and the only source of eternal life. St. John, as one of the twelve and a witness to Christ’s glory, sets his Gospel in a cosmic context, revealing Christ as the eternal light of God, the truth and voice of the father, the divine glory shining in the midst of men. In The Gospel of John: Beholding the Glory, Farley works from a literal translation of the original Greek and examines John section by section, explaining its meaning in contemporary language.

“Again St. John explains that this translates into Peter, Petros in the Greek.) This renaming is no thoughtless quip. Rather, it represents Christ’s acceptance of Simon as His disciple, for to give a person another name is to exercise authority over him and his destiny (see Gen. 17:5, where God renames Abram as Abraham). From this moment on, Andrew and Simon are the Lord’s disciples, in that they have committed themselves to learn from Him as their Teacher.” (Pages 34–35)

“Why then does he write another Gospel at all? He writes to compel belief, to present a case for the divinity of Jesus. This is his own stated purpose (20:30–31), and it is confirmed in the data he presents.” (Pages 9–10)

“Jesus calls them, like Mary, to see Him as One who has authority and to bring themselves under this authority. That is why John focuses on Mary early in this story, in v. 1. She is mentioned not simply because she is the one who gives Jesus the news that the wine has failed. She is mentioned because she is an image of Israel—she accomplishes the role-reversal that all in Israel are called to accomplish. When Jesus begins to assert His authority and gather disciples, she submits to that authority.” (Pages 41–42)

“The disciples must not look for causes, as judges, but for opportunities that the works of God—those of healing, forgiveness, and newness of life—might be manifested in him.” (Page 170)

“fountain-fed well to rest, while they went away into the nearby city to buy food (see v. 8). Like all travelers, they” (Page 72)
