About John Thomas Seccombe

Plato II of Moscow (1737–1812), originally known as Peter Levshin, was educated at the seminary and theological academy in Moscow, where he went on to teach Greek and rhetoric. He later taught at the monastery of the Holy Trinity near Moscow, where he became a monk, taking the name Plato. He became rector of the seminary of the monastery, and in 1762 was called to the Russian court to be the religious instructor for Paul Petrovitch, the heir apparent and son of Catherine the Great. Plato II was made bishop of Tver in 1770, then archbishop of Moscow. In 1787, he became metropolitan of Moscow, remaining in this role until his death.
