Overview

The theme for this year’s lectures is both timely and practical. Almost everyone admits to being against sin, but not everyone can define and recognize it. It is important for God’s people to be reminded again and again of the terrible nature of sin and of its consequences. The modern concepts of sin which think only in terms of “weaknesses” and “faults” are totally inadequate. We must see sin as an affront against God! The reality of sin and its far-reaching effects are made clear in the Bible. Paul reminds us: “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—” (Romans 5:12). The death of Jesus best illustrates the terribleness of sin. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Paul reminds us that Jesus gave His life for those who were His enemies: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). This was the way chosen by God before the foundation of the world to bring about our redemption (Ephesians 1:4–7; 1 Peter 1:17–21).

“Transgression has the original sense of conscious rebellion against God” (Page 6)

“We die as a result of sin, both spiritually (Rom. 5:12–18) and physically (1 Cor. 15:20–23). When we watch our loved ones dying little by little, whether of cancer or old age, we need to remember that sin did that. When we see the skeletal bodies of little children starving to death in third world countries, we need to remember that sin did that. Sin is ultimately responsible for most of our tears and heartaches. But sin is also directly responsible for much of the suffering in this world. Many of the deaths on our highways are the direct result of the violation of the speed limit or drunkenness or both. The scourge of AIDS is spreading like an epidemic because of homosexuality, fornication, and drugs. Venereal diseases and unwanted pregnancies are the result of immorality.” (Page 4)

“Herein lies a failure with many Christians. They are caught up in material endeavors. They are so busy perfecting their careers, perfecting their appearance, perfecting their golf swing, perfecting their houses and lawns, perfecting the impression they make on others, that they have little time for perfecting holiness. Their concern for worldly success squeezes out their concern for perfecting holiness. The fault does not lie in the Potter, nor in the instruments which He uses. The fault lies within themselves.” (Page 28)

“It must also be observed that the Old Testament does not anywhere teach a corruption of human nature derived from Adam, still less an imputation of his guilt. All that it teaches is the universality of sin in Adam’s offsprings’” (Page 6)
