In 1968, Pope Paul VI issued an encyclical on the regulation of birth, called Humanae Vitae. This document was very controversial since many people were apparently expecting the Catholic Church to change her teaching and accept birth control. In this study, you will see how the Holy Father’s words concerning the consequences of accepting birth control turned out to be prophetic. This book has four chapters/lessons and includes answers.
“In summary, for conjugal love to be the abundant love that God offers us it can be nothing less than free, total, faithful, and fruitful. Remove any one of these four characteristics, and love is reduced. Without a commitment to all four aspects of love, the object of our affection, one’s spouse, is made an object for one’s own pleasure and not a person who is to be cherished for his or her own sake. Remove any one of these characteristics, and the conjugal love between spouses ceases to be the symbol of the inner life of the Trinity.” (Page 15)
“Utilitarianism is a philosophy which evaluates and emphasizes the usefulness of every human activity. What is useful is what gives pleasure. Pleasure is to be actively sought and pain is to be avoided, not only by individuals but by society as a whole. The obvious problem with this is that but often what is truly good and what one’s conscience bids one to do involves pain or the renunciation of pleasure.” (Page 12)
“Kant, contributed significantly to the philosophy of personalism when he said that in our activities, ‘a person should never be a means to an end, but always the end.’” (Page 12)
“Eugenics is a social philosophy of perfecting humanity and lessoning human suffering by improving human genetic stock” (Page 3)
“in that they are made in the image and likeness of God, endowed with a rational soul and free will” (Page 5)
