“the earnest invitation extended to sinners to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.” (Page 425)

“The point of the parable, then, is this, Let everyone be faithful in using the opportunities for service which the Lord has given him. These opportunities, bestowed upon each according to his (God-given) ability, should, out of gratitude to God, be improved in such a manner that the glory of God Triune is advanced, his kingdom extended, and his ‘little ones’ benefited. Negligence is punished; diligence, rewarded.” (Page 884)

“To hallow God’s name means to hold it in reverence; hence, to hold him in reverence, to honor, glorify, and exalt him. To do this, far more than a merely intellectual knowledge of the meaning of the divine names is required. Humility of spirit, gratitude of heart, earnest study of God’s works until observation changes into rapturous astonishment and worship is certainly implied.” (Page 328)

“Jesus forces the members of the Sanhedrin to change their time-table, so that it will harmonize with his (and the Father’s) time-table. The enthusiasm of the crowds with respect to Jesus will hasten the crisis.” (Page 760)

“Probable meaning: ‘If it be thy will do not permit us, weak as we are by nature and prone to sin, to enter into situations which in the natural course of events would expose us to temptation and fall (cf. 26:41), but, whatever be thy way with us, deliver us from the evil one.’” (Pages 336–337)

William Hendriksen (1900–1982) earned his ThD from Princeton Theological Seminary. He was professor of New Testament literature at Calvin Theological Seminary, coauthor of Baker’s New Testament Commentary, and author of several scholarly works.
