Overview

Employing the methodology of social-scientific biblical criticism, the author investigates the pneumatology of John and 1 John. With particular attention paid to the spirit passages in John, the pneumatology of 1 John is studied with a view to the development between the two writings and to what this suggests about the socio-cultural context of the Johannine community. This study explores patron-client relations, and specifically the variation known as brokerage, and its explanatory power in elucidating the relationship between God, Jesus, the Spirit-Paraclete, and believers.

The author asserts that the Spirit in John is characterized as a broker and that this understanding figures prominently in the theology of the fourth Gospel as well as in the debate reflected in 1 John.

Top Highlights

“This work involves delineating who is loyal to God in accepting Jesus and who is not, and extending fellowship only to those who prove faithful. In this sense, the disciples become subordinate brokers who provide access to Jesus and the benefits he brokers to those who appear to be worthy clients of Jesus. That they have the spirit legitimates them as children of God and subordinate brokers to Jesus. However, the spirit does not primarily serve a legitimating role for the disciples, as will be seen below. Rather, of first importance for them is the fact that the spirit opens up the possibility of their receiving the benefit of eternal life.” (Page 113)

“This thesis will demonstrate how spirit is used by the Evangelist in the Gospel proper to designate that which is of the realm of God. It serves as a sign of Jesus’ origins ‘from above’ and thus legitimates Jesus as the only one capable of providing access to the realm of God, or eternal life. New birth in spirit is a benefit proffered by Jesus to those who accept him, making them children of God and thus opening up to them all of the benefits of God’s patronage. In John, spirit functions to set Jesus apart from all earthly means of gaining access to God.” (Pages 21–22)

Brown’s study is the first major attempt to apply patron-client categories to Johannine pneumatology . . . this remarkable, ground-breaking study is a must for scholars of John’s pneumatology.

  1. Richard Bridgan
This is an excellent work of presenting and legitimately sustaining a helpful heuristic model for reading and analyzing the Johannine writings. Although the author specifically addresses Johannine pneumatology, as I read through the monograph I found myself reflecting on many other intertextual and conceptual connections, both of biblical and non-biblical sources. The title didn't really "speak" to me and I nearly passed over the opportunity to avail myself to this month's free access provided by Logos/Faithlife. So grateful that I didn't! The author is thorough; subsequently, the reading is frequently repetitive. But I considered that for me, this was likely a helpful aid to my comprehension and retention. I'm very thankful I was prompted to further check it out and read it through.
