Contemporary Christians know that God answers prayer and that praying is important, but most also wish their prayer life could be more effective. Murray instructs readers from Scripture and the life of Jesus that prayer is the root and strength of all work for God, that God intends to answer every prayer, and that prayer is meant to be a way of life. These thirty-one classic meditations, written in 1885, have been edited and clarified for new readers.

Top Highlights

“Jesus did not teach His disciples how to preach but how to pray. To know how to speak to God is more vital than knowing how to speak to men. It is power with God not man that is of supreme importance.” (source)

“In the Old Testament all was shadow and promise. Jesus brought and gives the reality, the substance, of things hoped for. In Him the blessings and powers of eternal life are our actual possession and experience. Jesus is full of grace and truth. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth. Through Him the grace that is in Jesus is ours in deed and truth, a positive communication out of the divine life. So worship in spirit is worship in truth, actual living fellowship with God, with a real correspondence and harmony between the Father, who is a spirit, and the child praying in the Spirit.” (source)

“As long as we look at prayer chiefly as the means of maintaining our own Christian life, we cannot fully know what it is intended to be. But when we learn to regard it as the most important work entrusted to us and as the root and strength of all other work, then we understand that there is nothing we need more than to study and practice the art of praying in the correct manner.” (source)

“The man who would truly worship God, who would find, know, possess, and enjoy God must be in harmony with Him and have the capacity for receiving Him. Because God is spirit, we must worship Him in spirit. As God is, so His worshiper must be.” (source)

“One of our first lessons in the school of prayer must be to understand what it means to pray in the spirit and in truth and to know how we can do it.” (source)

Andrew Murray

Andrew Murray (May 9, 1828–January 18, 1917) was a South African pastor, teacher, and writer. He was educated in Aberdeen, Scotland, and at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. In 1848, Murray was ordained in the Dutch Reformed Church and returned to live and work in South Africa.

Murray was very focused on missions, considering it to be “the chief end of the church.” In 1889 he cofounded the South African General Mission with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. As their work spread throughout the continent, the mission’s name changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF), and in 1998 AEF joined SIM which today has over 1,800 active missionaries in over 43 countries. Andrew Murray authored over 240 books, including Abide in Christ, The Holiest of All, The Spiritual Life, and The Mystery of the True Vine.
