Overview

Whether debating Marxists, college professors, or Islamic apologists, Josh McDowell's hallmark has always been to walk boldly into enemy territory and speak truth. This book is based on the expectation that—with a growing number of adults becoming increasingly skeptical toward Christianity—there is a need for a solid body of persuasive evidence to be presented to them. This is a sourcebook for doubting seekers as well as current believers who need persuasive information to share with friends. Evidence for Christianity is McDowell's compelling answer to the hard questions so many Christians are afraid to discuss.

“‘Without the belief in the resurrection the Christian faith could not have come into being. The disciples would have remained crushed and defeated men. Even had they continued to remember Jesus as their beloved teacher, his crucifixion would have forever silenced any hopes of his being the Messiah. The cross would have remained the sad and shameful end of his career. The origin of Christianity therefore hinges on the belief of the early disciples that God had raised Jesus from the dead’ (Craig, KTR, 116–17).” (Page 247)

“‘Faith in the resurrection is the very keystone of the arch of Christian faith, and, when it is removed, all must inevitably crumble into ruin’ (Liddon, as cited in Smith, TS, 577).” (Page 249)

“The basic apologetic thesis of these notes is this: ‘There is an infinite, all-wise, all-powerful, all-loving God who has revealed Himself by means natural and supernatural in creation, in the nature of man, in the history of Israel and the Church, in the pages of Holy Scripture, in the incarnation of God in Christ, and in the heart of the believer by the gospel’ (Ramm, PCE, 33).” (Page 2)

“I believe that the best rebuttal to those who make a disjunction between the Christ of faith and the Jesus of history is first a rebuttal to the philosophical presuppositions and then a strong presentation of the historical reliability of the New Testament accounts of Jesus.” (Page 626)

“In spite of its diversity, the Bible presents a single unfolding story: God’s redemption of human beings.” (Page 23)

This is a different title for Evidence That Demands A Verdict. Very little is changed between updates. I agree the latest is nice, but not necessary.

This book is good, but Josh McDowell has an updated version called "The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict" which I think should be on Logos
