Colossians & Philemon Verse by Verse

While the apostle Paul was in prison, he wrote to the Colossian Christians to help them maintain their focus on the lordship of Jesus against the claims of false teachers that had snuck in among them. At the same time as he sent this letter to the wider church, he also sent a short letter to his friend and coworker Philemon that displays Paul’s masterful skill at conflict resolution.

In Colossians & Philemon Verse by Verse, Grant R. Osborne carefully and accessibly makes sense of these two important letters, while at the same time drawing on his years of scholarly research on the New Testament. The result is a clear exposition of Colossians and Philemon, explaining what they meant in their first-century setting and what they mean today.

Easy reading. Easy to understand. You can tell they've done their homework. One of the principles I use when evaluating commentaries, is whether they're faithful to what the Bible actually says, or whether they're laboring to come up with an interpretive compromise that doesn't offend the worldly culture of our day (Jesus rebuked the Scribes and Pharisees for setting aside the true meaning of Scripture, in favor of their man-made traditions). For this reason, I always check what they say about passages that define the roles of men and women in the church and marriage (e.g. 1 Corinthians 14:33-35; 1 Timothy 2:11-15; 1 Peter 3:1-5, etc.). This volume on Colossians 3, starts right off with feminist objections to a role of submission for women, citing Galatians 3:28, and stating there's a strong argument to be made for the role of submission to be abolished for wives. Eventually, the author reluctantly acknowledges a diminished role of authority for husbands, but only after warning husbands and laboring greatly to water-down the meaning to the satisfaction of feminists.
